What Did I Do Wrong Here (French Press)

Alright so. I'm relatively new to coffee and such, but I have a french press that I use pretty regularly (and wash pretty regularly). I had a whole routine and wanted to upgrade it using James Hoffman's french press technique. I did pretty much everything right I think? The beans may be too finely ground because I use a blade grinder that my mom gave me that used to be hers, and I know blade grinders aren't great but it's what I have, and it's better than pre-ground at least. I manage to get a fairly even grind out of it though, mostly by shaking it around and finessing it. But other than that I'm confused why I got jet fuel instead of a balanced coffee. I use a medium roast coffee, Philz since my grocer carries it.

For reference as well, I used less than half the coffee (roughly 27 grams) and did everything else the same and it was better, but I still feel like I must have done something wrong. Help?
