I want to buy some equipment but am confused as to where to start – what’s the cheapest possible set up?

I love coffee from coffee shops but I'm a broke college student and can't afford it. So I started researching how I can make my own, I specifically want to be able to make homemade espresso. My budget is like £40 tops as I'd have to put some money aside for a few weeks/months to even afford to spend that much which is fine if I can get something serviceable for that amount.

I looked into a French press and an aeropress as both are within my budget but I don't understand if I can reach my goal of having an espresso like at a cafe with them. Do I need a grinder or can I buy preground? My favourite coffee shop sells both whole and and ground beans which were usually roasted 2-3 weeks prior and they grind them for you in store. Is that fresh enough to be decent? I do not have a particularly discerning pallete to be Frank, I just want it to taste better than nescafe

Thanks
