[CAFE OWNERS] Background before starting a shop?

I’ve worked in coffee for 6 yrs as a barista and shift supervisor and have passion for it. I’ve decided that I want to open my own place in the future and so I’ve been doing the research to make a business plan.

Lately, however, I’ve begun to realize just how many coffee shops are started by people who are already successful financially or established in other fields and they branch out to starting a cafe for the entrepreneurship. Not to mention the constant negative “don’t start a coffee shop they always fail” rhetoric often thrown around (I know soo many do but we all know there are plenty of successful ones!) All this can be a bit defeating. I’ll add I know that’s not always the case, as my current boss started from operating a coffee cart to being asked to joint venture and taking it over where now it’s been in business for over 15yrs and is doing well.

It’s made me curious though of what you’ve all experienced with fellow owner’s backgrounds or even your own? How was the business conceived and developed?
