A bright orange Hunter’s Moon will take over the sky on Sunday

It’s getting spooky up in here

By Angela Garrity, Guest blogger

Astrology and astronomy lovers are anxiously waiting for the big day to arrive — a Hunter’s Moon will rise this Sunday, October 13. There is no reason to “Beware the Moon” this weekend, because you won’t want to miss the truly be a magical unveiling in the sky.

An orange "Hunter's Moon" is showing behind silhouetted trees

A Hunter’s Moon is a full moon that appears only once in fall, where the moon appears larger and has an orange tone to it. This is perfectly setting the sky’s surroundings to feel spooky and stunning.

The Hunter’s Moon likely reaped its naming in early American folklore. Its rise is seen as a signal to hunters that it was time to go hunt and prepare for the upcoming winter.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Full Hunter’s moon is set to reach its peak fullness on Sunday, October 13 and will appear for roughly three days. The madness begins on Saturday morning and will last through Tuesday morning.

It’s the only night in the month when the Moon is in the sky all night long and visible in the sky at sunset and setting around sunrise the next day.

The Hunter’s Moon is the first full moon that occurs after the Harvest Moon and is not tied to occur in a specific month. The Hunter’s Moon can be seen in either October or November, depending on when the Harvest Moon makes its appearance. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that happens closest to the autumnal equinox and this year, the Harvest moon transpired on Friday the 13th.

This Sunday, step outside and look to the skies at 5:08 p.m. EDT to witness the full Hunter’s Moon at its peak. It will become brighter as the sky darkens after sunset.

Prepare thine eyes for the fall feasting with your favorite caffeinated brew, no less.
