How do you know what coffee is worth buying?

I try to go to an independent coffee shop (ie not Starbucks, Peets, Dunkin etc) every single day. I've been doing this for years and it brings me so much joy to meet new baristas, explore new neighbourhoods, and experience the unique design of so many places.

It has also made me quite the coffee snob. And yet, I don't actually know how to articulate what I like and why.

Each time I order (my fall/winter order is a short americano | my spring/summer order is an iced espresso), I end up spending ~$5-$6 with tip. I want the coffee to be as delicious as the experience of being somewhere new, but more often than I'd like, I'm disappointed.

I currently look for clues in Google reviews/pictures to help me figure out where I can actually get great coffee (note: I know this varies based on personal taste). I look for things like:

  • reviewers mentioning specifics about the coffee that I don't even understand
  • attention to design (counters not cluttered, interesting art etc)
  • pretty singular focus on coffee (ie the shop may sell pastries, but they don't have a whole cake menu)

I know there's a better way to do this though, so I'm hoping for some advice from more experienced and knowledgeable coffee connoisseurs. How do you decide where to go/what to order? How do you evaluate "good" coffee?
