What’s the Relationship Between Grind and Brew Time?

I've only recently started trying to brew better quality coffee so pls excuse the noob question. I can't seem to wrap my mind around the relationship between grind size and brew time. When trying to dial in the perfect cup of coffee which variable I should be controlling for, grind size, brew time, or both. Could I hypothetically be able to make two identical tasting cups of coffee with finer grind and shorter extraction vs. coarser grind and longer extraction time? Is there something I'm missing?

If you have blogs or videos you could point me to I'd greatly appreciate it.
