minimum dose size?

I use the Hario switch to brew my coffee and am trying to reduce my caffeine consumption. Hence I would like to brew smaller cups of coffee. I am currently using 10g of coffee with 160g of water. (1:16 Ratio) I am wondering if there is a minimum amount of coffee...

Thoughts on a tasting with friends

TL;DR – Cupping complex coffees is a lot of fun, even if you are not super into coffee in general. If you are into coffee and some friends are not but like to learn, doing a cupping together can STILL be lots of fun. Picking coffees with clear notes makes this interesting for everyone.

Just some background to start. To treat myself for my birthday, I arranged to buy smaller bags (60g) of several coffees that I had not tried from a producer I really like (some pics here). Little did I know that my wife had arranged for several friends to travel halfway around the world to visit me, a few of whom are into good coffee. We ranged in the group from "I use third wave water, weigh beans and water, and am too far down the rabbit hole to ever get out", to "I grind my coffee fresh", to "instant coffee gets me my caffeine."

We did a cupping of four of the coffees together, all of which were fantastic, but more importantly, they all had a clear separation of flavours. Many of the flavours were easy to pick out for all of us, even those of us who spend less time thinking/caring about coffee. Everyone was agreeing with flavours on the first two 'steps' of the tasting wheel, and often the notes all the way to the edge were clear to all involved.

All this is to say that if you think you don't have anyone to do a cupping with, pick up some coffees with interesting flavours and drag new friends into the world of speciality coffee!
