Honore de Balzac drank a sh*t ton of coffee every day for 25 years

Think you drink a lot of coffee? Think again.

Honore de Balzac, a nineteenth-century French writer, drank the equivalent of around 47 cups of coffee A DAY for 25 years. Yes, forty. seven. cups.

A portrat of Honore de Balzac, a nineteenth century writer

He got his caffeine fix through shots of espresso, and even chewed raw coffee grounds when he really needed a strong caffeine fix.

How someone could manage THAT much caffeine without severe jitters is beyond me. A study came out that said 25 cups of coffee a day is still safe for your heart, but even so, he drank almost double that. But hey, more power to him.

During what seems to be his world-record caffeine high, de Balzac wrote 47 novels, 12 novellas, 18 short stories, and 8 plays. He also create the first-ever continuing series with character crossovers, essentially creating the model for all genre fiction. The number of characters he created? 2,472.

This all came out of a hand-cut quill pen, by the way. No typewriters, no computers, no keyboards. But with that much caffeine in you, I can imagine he was a pretty fast writer.

So if you’re looking to up your creativity and productivity, the answer is more coffee. Then again, the answer to everything in life is always to drink more coffee.
