Rens waterproof shoes are made with used coffee grounds

By Angela Garrity, Guest blogger

Entrepreneurs in Helsinki, Finland know literally what it’s like to keep running on coffee. Son Chu and Jesse Tran have created sneakers from used coffee grounds in their brand, Rens, the World Economic Forum reports.

Rens is the world’s first waterproof, breathable, eco-friendly and odor-resistant shoe made from coffee, the Kickstarter project states. Every pair of Rens is constructed from 300 grams of locally sourced and recycled coffee grounds and the equivalent of 6 recycled plastic bottles. All coffee used in the production of Rens is post-consumer waste that would otherwise end up in landfills and contribute to climate change, which is good news for the planet.

The used coffee grounds are used to create an incredibly flexible yarn. This yard holds some pretty cool foot fashion technology such as allowing for odors to be trapped in micro-pockets, antimicrobial for great disinfectant use, UV light blocking properties to keep colors staying vivid and a quick dry outer layer.

Sadly, the shoes do not smell like coffee, but look on the bright side, pessimists. Being made from recycled coffee grounds means the anti-odor properties ensure they won’t smell like anything at all. That keeps everyone happy.

Rens are estimated with a delivery date of November, according to their Kickstarter page, so consider adding these to your holiday wish list. Versatility is key with Rens and they just might help you kick the holidays into high gear.
