Cows powered by coffee creamer to produce the best milk possible

By Angela Garrity, Guest Blogger

Maybe happy cows don’t come from California, after all? The dairy cows who call Iowa’s Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm home have boosted the farm’s national rank for dairy production to 2nd place, but Bessie has been keeping a dairy good secret to her success.

The four legged ladies are powered by coffee creamer, according to Channel 3000. The sugar and carbohydrates contained in the creamer are mixed into the cows’ hay and helps the cows produce some of the best milk in the country.  Each bovine is fed one half-pound of coffee creamer a day, which translates to 4 pounds of milk per cow each day. At least there’s one good use for creamer

Owner and farmer, John Maxwell, have cut down landfill waste by taking in 2,000 pounds of creamer that would otherwise wind up in a landfill.

“Dairy sustainability defined for me is good for the planet, good for the people, and it’s profitable,” Maxwell explains.

It does sound a bit strange and slightly cannibalistic but before the days of discovering the creamer, the cows used to be fed chocolate cake mix. This ingredient was stopped because the cows benefitted more from the creamer instead of the cake mix. Guess even cows can’t have their cake and eat it, too?

Angela Garrity is a guest blogger for Death Wish Coffee Co. Her work can be found in Vapun Magazine as well as on their website.
