MoccaMaster 8-cup solution for single serving

MoccaMaster 8-cup solution for single serving

minimum dose size?

I use the Hario switch to brew my coffee and am trying to reduce my caffeine consumption. Hence I would like to brew smaller cups of coffee. I am currently using 10g of coffee with 160g of water. (1:16 Ratio) I am wondering if there is a minimum amount of coffee...

MoccaMaster 8-cup solution for single serving

I wanted to level-up my coffee game. Coming from a V60 pourover, I picked up a Baratza Encore & a refurb 8-cup KBTS Moccamaster. Since I'm the only coffee drinker in the house I make single servings in the morning and afternoon, but wanted the 8-cup maker because we have guests often and wanted the flexibility of making a larger batch. I figured with the manual basket I could get a decent 2 cup brew by setting the basket to 1/2. The One Cup was an option, but then I'd be limited when having guests.

PROBLEM
Brewing with 2 (1/3) cups of water, ~15 grams of light roast bean (grind setting 17) the water would pass through the coffee bed almost immediately in 15-30 secs. Coffee was watery and distasteful.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS

  • Using lower grid settings (down to 12) w/ basket set to 1/2 open – Coffee was bitter
  • Used a V60 as the basket – water passed through bed too quickly. Same result as above.
  • Closed basket and allowed coffee to immerse for 4minutes – Coffee tasted much better, but that defeated the purpose of buying a coffee maker. Now I have a $300+ clever dripper

FINAL SOLUTION
Ordered a "Cup One" Moccamaster basket for $16. Added a ~3" tube spacer to raise the basket. Found something to put under my mug and push the carafe sensor (wife's tea pot worked lovely : )). Using 2 (1/3) cups of water, ~15 grams of bean (grind setting 16) I get a brew time of 3:45. Coffee tastes delicious. Dialing in the process now. Picture of the setup

CONCLUSION
The Cup One basket has a much smaller drain hole allowing a much slower flow rate for a single mug brew. Would be nice if Moccamaster had a product that can brew a nice quality single and multiple serving brew.

Maybe this can help someone else out there. Your thoughts, tips, tricks?
