Is hand grinding meant to be this difficult?

I was using pre-ground coffee for a while until a friend gifted me his no-longer-used Timemore Chestnut G1. I'm really struggling with it, and it's not even for fine grinding, just your standard fine-medium Aeropress grind. It's really difficult to rotate and often "catches" and gets stuck and I need to apply what I feel like is an uncomfortable amount of force – it doesn't rotate smoothly like I see on YouTube videos. The only way I can get it to grind smoothly is to use a medium or coarse grind, which is too coarse for me.

My options:

  • Naturally I could get an electric grinder – I was looking at the Breville Smart Grinder Pro, as it's in my price range. But I do want to use different beans every day (I often have 4-5 different coffees open at one time) and I think only the more expensive grinders have low/no retention.
  • Or should I buy a very good hand grinder, e.g. Comandante/1zpresso?
