minimum dose size?

I use the Hario switch to brew my coffee and am trying to reduce my caffeine consumption. Hence I would like to brew smaller cups of coffee. I am currently using 10g of coffee with 160g of water. (1:16 Ratio) I am wondering if there is a minimum amount of coffee...

If someone drops their coffee within 5 minutes of buying it, do you think they should be charged for their replacement coffee?

As a barista, who has worked in a lot of coffee shops over the years; I have found that the general consensus is that if a customer spills their drink, shortly after buying it, and without drinking it yet that you just replace their coffee free of charge.

I’ve watched people come in numerous times over the years attempting to buy another coffee after spilling their first and I’ve always told them not to worry about it and offered them a free one. They walk out happy, and it diffuses an embarrassing situation. From working in bars too, this is also the case with alcoholic beverages (unless a customer is too drunk).

Today, myself and my girlfriend sat in a coffee shop and enjoyed some great coffee. After we finished we strolled around the neighbourhood, but couldn’t find anywhere else to have a good coffee so we came back into the shop for a take away coffee. I really enjoyed the coffee the first time round, and because I’m a barista myself I made extra effort to be friendly and tip (Which isn’t common in the country that I’m living in). Anyways, I got a flat white and went on my way.

Within about 5 minutes of leaving I dropped my coffee everywhere. I came back into the store laughing and told the barista that I just spilled my coffee everywhere. He asked me did I even get to taste it, I laughed and said no. He then asked me did I want the same coffee and then said “okay that’s 4.50”. I payed, thanked him again and left.

Now, I am in no way looking for freebies, and didn’t walk in looking for a free replacement; but given my experience I think that it’s more common to offer the replacement up? I’m not necessarily mad about it, but it did bring up this question?

Baristas, cafe employees, owners and customers of coffee shops, what is your opinion?

EDIT: So, what I’ve learned:

  • Is it nice for the shop to replace it for free? Yes! It’s undoubtedly a nice thing to do, nobody can deny that

  • Am I entitled to a free replacement? No! It’s my fault! But thats okay. If I wanted a freebie to begin with, I would have stuck to my own coffee shop. It’s good to support business and it hasn’t turned me off the cafe. Although, personally I would be more inclined to visit a cafe for a second time that went out of their way for me.

  • Leaving the shop makes a difference too

  • Is it a good to replace it for free, from a business point of view? Yes! The small loss of the replacement coffee will definitely increase the chances of a second visit/potential regulars. A potential regular > a one stop customer.

  • Will any of you get a free replacement from me, if you were to ever be in my coffee shop? Yes 100%
