Can I do damage by accidentally brewing a gasket?

I did something extremely stupid, but bear with me. I bought a new espresso maker (Giannina Stovetop) and it apparently came with an extra gasket for future replacements, but this wasn't mentioned anywhere. The extra gasket was placed in the top chamber (where the hot coffee runs into) and it fit so perfectly that I thought it was 'by design'. I only realized my mistake when I saw it floating in the finished coffee.

Since I wasn't supposed to drink the first few brews with the new espresso maker anyway, I threw the coffee out, but I am wondering if this extra gasket in the wrong place might have caused any damage, both to the espresso maker as well as the gasket itself.
