Plane makes emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland

By Angela Garrity, Guest blogger

Coffee spills happen to the best of us. It seems to occur at the worst time possible — in the car, on the train, but how about while flying a plane? Yes, it happens there, too.

Recently, BBC reported that a spill in the cockpit of an Airbus A330 from Frankfurt that was heading to Cancun in February was forced to make an emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland. The spill caused the pilots’ audio control panels to melt and there was smoke in the cockpit. Oxygen masks were deployed and thankfully, no injuries to crew or the 337 passengers on board. Oops.

The incident that occurred on the unidentified commercial airliner happened because coffee was served to the pilots without lids, which is normal for the airliner. The pilot out his coffee on his tray table and the cup was later knocked over sending coffee on the commander’s lap and the main audio control panel. Oops.

Soon both of the audio control panels became so hot, buttons started melting. This resulted in the control panels failing and communications difficulties. The plane was diverted to Shannon, where it made the emergency landing.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) states that the airliner has changed its procedure to ensure that cup lids are provided for flights on all routes, including compliance by the flight crew.

Please keep those lids on coffee so everyone stays safe. No one needs to experience a flight diversion that ends up in a river dance by an airport flashmob inside of a city they weren’t even trying to get to in the first place.

No one needs a nightmare at twenty thousand feet or however they are choosing to transport themselves.  Spills can make a recipe for certain disaster. Be careful out there, everybody.
