Opinions on modding for stepless grinding

Lance Hedrick always modifies his stepped grinders to be steppless and advises others to do the same, but this seems like there would have to be some downside to it. I don't see much information on it when Googling around. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this practice? I would think that it would at least void any warranty, I haven't been able to find any answer to this, either.

For reference, I have a Fellow Ode Gen. 2 and am very happy with the steps available, but If I might want to consider it in the future, especially if I get an espresso grinder. For me, the steps available on the Ode are quite satisfactory for my filter coffee (V60, French press, and Aeropress are my brew methods). Lance recomends this for the Ode as well. Any thoughts?

edit: Lance does this modification with vertically mounted flat burrs, such as the Ode or Xeoleo.
