Can I do damage by accidentally brewing a gasket?

I did something extremely stupid, but bear with me. I bought a new espresso maker (Giannina Stovetop) and it apparently came with an extra gasket for future replacements, but this wasn't mentioned anywhere. The extra gasket was placed in the top chamber (where the hot coffee runs into) and it fit so perfectly that I thought it was 'by design'.
